About the event
Gay Chatfield spent more than 30 years as an art teacher before stepping into sculpture in her own right. Her practice took shape after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, when she began weaving found branches, vines and other natural materials into sculptural forms, a technique she calls random weaving. Inspired in part by American artist Patrick Dougherty's willow-weaving Stickworks project at Fed Square, Gay has since created more than 40 structures across public and private settings, including a piece for the Lemur enclosure at Melbourne Zoo, and works with the Urban Discovery team on natural material design. She also teaches workshops in private gardens on the basics of random weaving.
